INNOVATION OF INTERFERENCE'S

     SHORT FILM POSTER

PARANOIA  :-  A figment of your imagination

CULTURE AND IMPORTANCE

The use of legal or illegal drugs by a person without the approval or guidance of a doctor or any other competent authority can cause detrimental effect on a person’s health. When a person frequently consumes drugs such as opioids, cannabis, ecstasy & LSD etc. especially in large dosages then this can lead to addiction, permanent brain damage, paranoia, hallucinations, anxiety etc. & in some cases even death. However, many people use these drugs for recreational purposes in order to escape from their reality. When a person is under the influence of these drugs, their brain finds it difficult to process information due to the release of dopamine & endorphins within their body, that allows them to experience an out of body sensation.

However, if a person was watching a horror genre film (which acts as a stimulus) while under the influence of such drugs and was experiencing the uncontrolled fear from this film, then in this situation their nervous system would stimulate their brain to produce adrenaline (fight, fright, flight effect) as a response to overcome their overwhelming fear. At the same time, the effect of these drugs on the brain would cause the person to experience hallucination, feel anxiety, experience irrational fears, insomnia and paranoia which can put stress on their mental health.

In many instances, people struggle to cope up with this stress and find themselves in a predicament where they have to differentiate between their reality and this surreal nightmare that they were experiencing, which could have a long-lasting effect on their life and affect the social fabric of the society, as drug abuse is one of the biggest problems faced by countries across the globe.

RESEARCH

In the year 2013, the National Drug Use Survey Pakistan was conducted by U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in collaboration with the government of Pakistan to deduce the extent of drug use with in Pakistan (United Nations office on Drugs & Crime, 2022). The damning results of that survey revealed that an estimated 6 percent of the total population – (9 percent adult male and 2.9 percent adult female population, which was approximately 6.7 million people had used drugs during the preceding year (United Nations office on Drugs & Crime, 2022), among which 4 million were cannabis, synthetic  & cocaine users while 2.7 million were opioid users (Anti Narcotics Force, 2023). The increase in opioids use was largely due to the opiates drug trafficking through the porous borders between Pakistan & Afghanistan (Anti Narcotics Force, 2023). According to the World Drug Report 2022, around 284 million people worldwide were drug users in 2020 (United Nations office on Drugs & Crime, 2022) with the no. of daily & annual deaths worldwide from drug abuse had increased to approximately 685 & 187,100 respectively (Anti Narcotics Force, 2023)

MOTIVATION AND THE REASEON BEHIND IT

This story is motivated by my fascination of the psychological/horror film genre. Over the years, I have watched many films such as “The Shining”, “Shutter Island” & “Jacobs Ladder” etc. that have dealt with this genre, where the protagonist in pursuit of his goals tries to explore and endure the dark side of human psychology to the point that they can no longer differentiate between their reality and the surreal experience of their imagination, which at times is attributed to side effects of drug abuse or mental disorders, while in some instances the reasoning is even more sinister, supernatural and Evil.
